How to play Tic-Tac-Toe

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Tic-Tac-Toe. Complete a row, column or diagonal of three marks. If the board fills without a line, the round is a draw. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Choose a comfortable screen position before beginning. Look at what changes after your first action.

Read before acting

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Complete a row, column or diagonal of three marks. If the board fills without a line, the round is a draw. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Keep the controls in easy reach.

Step by step

  1. Player 1 places a cross in an empty cell.
  2. Player 2 places a circle in another empty cell.
  3. Take turns, watching both your winning opportunities and the opponent’s threats.
  4. The board stops accepting moves when a player wins or the game is drawn.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Use the control method described here for this activity. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

A useful example

Two crosses in the top row threaten a win in the remaining top-row cell. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Read the matching step again.

Watch out for this

You cannot replace a mark that is already on the board. Check the rule before repeating the action. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
